What is a Digital Product Passport?

A complete guide to understanding, implementing, and leveraging product digitalization for compliance and growth.

The Definition

A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a digital record that provides comprehensive information about a product's lifecycle, from raw material extraction to end-of-life recycling. Think of it as a "digital twin" that travels with the physical product.

Mandated by the EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), DPPs aim to improve transparency, boost circularity, and reduce environmental impact by making product data easily accessible to consumers, regulators, and recyclers.

The Implementation Process

1

Identify Data Requirements

Determining what data is needed based on your product category and regulatory standards (e.g., material composition, carbon footprint, repairability).

2

Centralize Product Data

Aggregating structured data from ERPs, PIMs, and supply chain partners into a single immutable record.

3

Generate Digital Carrier

Creating a unique identifier (UID) for each product unit or batch, typically accessible via a QR code, NFC tag, or RFID.
